Kentucky Tenants (c3)
Organization Description
Kentucky Tenants is a grassroots, member-led organization based in Lexington and Morehead that works to protect renters, strengthen communities, and advance housing justice across Kentucky. We organize tenants to understand and exercise their rights, advocate for safe and affordable housing, and hold landlords and public institutions accountable. Grounded in the belief that housing is a human right, we center the voices of low-income renters, students, and rural residents, building collective power to win lasting policy and system changes that create stable, dignified homes for all.
2026 Programs
In 2026, Kentucky Tenants will focus on deep base building in Lexington and Morehead by organizing tenants into strong neighbor unions and developing tenant leaders. Our core programs will help renters understand their rights, collectively address unsafe housing conditions, and take coordinated action to improve living standards. We will expand leadership development for low-income tenants and college students through trainings, one-on-one organizing, and campus-based tenant organizing. By linking direct tenant support with leadership pathways, we will grow durable, tenant-led power across Kentucky. We are also building out social housing, learning, and creating capacity.
2025 Programs
In 2025, Kentucky Tenants strengthened its presence in Lexington and Morehead by expanding its tenant base, supporting renters facing unsafe and unstable housing, and building early neighbor unions. We provided direct tenant support through rights education, workshops, and one-on-one assistance, while advancing local campaigns on housing conditions and accountability. We deepened partnerships with college students to address student housing issues and began developing tenant leaders through trainings and organizing experiences. These efforts laid the groundwork for a stronger, tenant-led movement heading into 2026.
